St Giles street
Northampton's St Giles Street, has scooped first prize in the city category of the Great British High Street competition.
St Giles Street beat off strong competition from Bradford's Mill Road and North Parade in Cambridge to take first place in the competition. Almost 200,000 public votes cast in the competition which were made up 50 per cent of the overall score.
Judges from the competition, which was run by the Department for Communities and Local Government, visited St Giles Street in October to discover how the Cultural Quarter and the St Giles Street traders have been working together to being out the character of the area.
The Great British High Street Judges Said: "Northampton beat off some tough opponents in the form of Bradford and Cambridge through its innovative approach to transforming its shops and high street. By bringing in residential development, developing a new cultural quarter and boosting its digital capacity, Northampton is a shining example of the high street turning around Itself. "
Councillor Mary Markham, leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: "We are absolutely delighted hurt St Giles Street has won this prestigious award Which Northampton and firmly puts the St Giles Quarter on the map. St Giles Street is packed with unique Independent shops, restaurants, cafes and even Businesses and the jewel in the crown of Northampton's town center.
"This is fantastic news for the town and I hope that to even more people will now come in to visit the St Giles Quarter to experience all it has to offer."
